Your Child Can Swim! International Swim Programme

Your Child Can Swim! International Learn To Swim Programme, STAnley Syllabus

In general a child is not consciously able to learn a proper swimming technique until it's at least 2 years when it has adequate levels of cognitive, physical and motor maturity. Children must be at least 2 years before starting the STAnley syllabus.  This class is suitable up to the child's 4th birthday.

Lessons are structured around the STA's International Learn to Swim Programme (STAnley - Early Years). This is an incentive based swimming skills scheme which has helped teach millions of children worldwide to swim. A child’s first learn to swim experience is one of the most important in terms of capturing and retaining their interest. I believe the best way to achieve this is to create safe environments in which children can be introduced to the water whilst having fun and by providing a progressive learn to swim programme that is both challenging and rewarding.

Offering a progressive aquatic awareness programme for young children typically from 2 to 3 years, the STAnley – First Steps Series combines a flexible mix of lessons, activities and incentives. There are seven progressive levels, each with its own full-colour A4 certificate and woven badge.

The STAnley – First Steps Series focuses on creating fun, positive experiences for young children that will not only help them to develop physically, but also emotionally, intellectually and socially, whilst equipping them with key safety skills in the water. It builds upon our commitment to making water a safe and enjoyable environment for young children, where they can gain valuable skills for a lifetime’s successful and safe swimming, and enjoyment of the aquatic environment.

By the time your child has completed STAnley Level 7, they will be able to swim 10 metres independently, demonstrating competency in front crawl and back stroke, breast stroke and dolphin kick.

The Series also links together and provides a more logical progression from the STARFISH baby and young child water safety programme, to the STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme and the National Teaching Plan. After completing the 7 steps of the STAnley First Steps Series, youngsters logically progress to the International Learn to Swim Programme (ILTSP) Level 2 – Goldfish Series.
